Predatory Publishing: the good, the bad and the ugly

Summary : The talk will provide an overview  of the predatory journals phenomenon, which affects the field of scholarly communication in the Open Access era. It offers an analytical account of the debates and the research being done, and discusses the multidimensional definition of predatory journals and of the new market for lists of ‘legitimate’ and ‘illegitimate’ journals. The presentation will highlight the main ethical and scientific issues that predatory journals raise in the Open Access publishing era and reports on the contexts that lead researchers, both young and senior, to publish in these outlets.



Bio : Chérifa Boukacem-Zeghmouri is Full Professor in Information and Communication Sciences at Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 and member of the research team ELICO. Based on the theoretical framework of cultural and creative industries, her research addresses mutations of scholarly communication to open and collaborative models. New forms of production, circulation, evaluation and legitimisation of scientific research constitute her main research themes. In this field, she has employed qualitative and bibliometric approaches. Chérifa Boukacem-Zeghmouri is Open Science officer for her institution, member of the COSO, co-pilot of the DORA Evaluation Working Group. She is also head of the IMST Master’s degree.
