It is now clearly accepted that inflammation plays a major role in the transformation of healthy into epileptic tissue (epileptogenesis) following severe brain damage. This inflammation, in addition to contributing to the extent of brain damage, also plays a role in pathological brain plasticity, which in turn supports brain hyperexcitability (and thus seizure onset) and comorbid cognitive and behavioral disorders. My research project is therefore articulated around 4 pillars: 1. Inflammation, and in particular to better understand the role played by monocyte-macrophages (mo-MP) infiltrating the brain parenchyma; 2. Pharmacology, in particular the development of drug candidates targeting the type 2 cannabinoid receptor massively expressed by mo-MP; 3. Cellular therapy, by exploring the potential offered by mesenchymal stem cells; and finally 4. Environmental enrichment, by investigating how it can interfere with the 3 previous pillars.
