Uses and misuses of statistical tests: what impact on our scientific work?

Always very present in our articles, statistical tests remain one of the most problematic elements of the grey area of scientific integrity. What exactly does the p-value tell us? Can I add data to become significant? How do I choose my sample size a priori?

To answer these and other questions, the scientific integrity group is organising a series of presentations/discussions on the use of statistics, open to all members of the CRNL, both young and senior researchers:

On 3 sessions from 12 to 1 pm, on May 5th, 16th and 22nd, at the Neurocampus,

(in order to adapt our organisation, we ask you to register on which day(s) you can come: https://framadate.org/QlC4p1rZ5gsMWNpx)

Please note that the slides will be in English and the presentations/discussions preferably in French, but we will adapt to the audience.

The topics we will cover are:

  1. What information is contained in the result of a statistical test?
What are the risks of incorrect interpretation of statistical tests?
Beware of questionable research practices (QRP)! (Nicolas Kuczewski)
  2. Important concepts for the interpretation of our data: power of a statistical test, confidence interval, effect size... (Nicolas Kuczewski and Tao Jiang)
  3. Demonstrations of free software tools (Tao Jiang and Claude Gronfier)
