Integrative Multisensory Perception, Action and Cognition

The team’s objectives are to decipher behavioural processes and neural mechanisms of multisensory perception, motor planning and execution, cognitive representations and executive control, all critical components of human behavior.

  1. Objective #1: to better understand these functions and their neural processes both in the healthy brain and the pathological brain.
  2. Objective #2: to transfer this basic knowledge to the society, by developing Neuroscience-based procedures for clinical diagnosis and rehabilitation.

These objectives are pursued through four complementary and coordinated axes: The Perceptual and Attentive Brain, The Acting Brain, The Plastic Brain, The Social Brain.

Methods and Techniques

Cutting-edge technological developments for 3-D kinematic analyses of movements in healthy subjects and in patients (eye tracking, upper-limb and whole body kinematics, real-time multisensory stimulation & gaze-contingent displays) and for complementary physiological and electrophysiological studies in human (EEG, TMS, tDCS) and functional brain imaging (MRI, PET, MEG).

IMPACT is also the sole CRNL team which investigates non-human primates (behavior, neuronal recording, fMRI).

IMPACT offers major contributions to Neuro-Immersion and Primage platforms.

Research Project

IMPACT provide unique contribution to CRNL’s

  1. Basic Research axis Perception, Attention, Action;
  2. Clinical Research axes Non-pharmacological rehabilitation & therapies and Biomarkers & prediction
  3. Transversal projects Naturalistic Neuroscience and Neuro-Education.

IMPACT’s program builds upon a long standing expertise in sensory-motor control and related plasticity processes, and increasingly emphasizes attentional and memory processes, un-conscious perception, decision making and agency, spatial hearing, brain representations of body and peripersonal space, eye movements and visuo-spatial perception.

Efforts are put to develop Naturalistic- and/or Social- Neuroscience protocols, along four scientific axes : Perceptual/Attentive Brain, Acting Brain, Plastic Brain, Social Brain. IMPACT recently hired several specialists in human social or cognitive Neuroscience and in non-human primate electrophysiology (Avenir/Atip 2018), allowing the team to widen its expertise and run complementary behavioral, neuroimaging, electrophysiological and neuromodulation studies in healthy and diseased human beings, as well as neuronal population recordings in behaving non-human primates.
