My research focuses on the development of minimally invasive brain monitoring tools, enabling second-by-second tracking of the concentrations of energy metabolites such as oxygen, glucose or lactate in the interstitial fluid. These tools are electrochemical microsensors that I have been developing for several years, with an overall size not exceeding fifteen microns in diameter. I have also developed sensors for amino acids (glutamate, D-serine) and nitric oxide. I'm implementing these tools to explore the metabolism of complex tissues, particularly the brain. I'm especially interested in monitoring the brain in situations of acute injury. I use electrochemical sensors to explore the pathological effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke on brain metabolism, as well as the effects of neuroprotective mechanisms such as ketogenic diet or recruitment of brain glycogen stores on recovery from stroke or trauma. These sensors enable a dynamic approach to brain metabolism, whether basal or during stimulation.
